Old or worn-out cars often find their way to scrap yards, salvage yards, and other businesses that pay cash for cars that are no longer roadworthy. How these cars are used and what value they offer depends on many things and may affect the sale price.

Salvage Operations

Automotive recycling or salvage has been around for many years, and the business model has not changed much. The salvage operator will typically pay cash for cars that are not driveable but still have parts on them that can be resold or recycled in some way.

Often the parts are sold to people making repairs or restoring an older vehicle that is hard to find replacement parts for. The used parts are removed from the junk cars when they come into the yard, and the salvage operator will test them to determine if they are good.

Good parts are resold and reused, while nonfunctioning components get stripped, crushed, or separated and then sold for scrap to metal recyclers. The salvage yard can make a decent income from scrap and parts sales together, and in turn, paying cash for cars that are not running or are unwanted is an excellent way to produce income and operating capital for the salvage yard.

Scrap Metal Recycling

Some scrap metal recyclers will pay cash for cars that are damaged, rusted, or worn out, but the seller must first prepare the car and remove items like tires, fabric, and hoses from the vehicle. A scrap yard is not in the business of reselling parts, so they are looking for cars that can be crushed and sold without adding much work to the process.

Each scrap yard will have different standards when considering buying a car, so if you are trying to sell old cars, you need to go over the guidelines with the scrap yard. If a vehicle comes in that has not been prepared, the scrap buyer may reject the load until the problem is corrected.

Junk car buying is a big business that is profitable if you can process the vehicles and resell them for a fair scrap price. However, before you head out to buy a bunch of junk cars to resell, check with the local scrap yards to ensure they will take the cars when you bring them in.

You also need to check the scrap prices to ensure you are not paying more for these cars than you are selling for. Keep in mind that prices change all the time, so it is vital that you plan your trip to the scrap yard when the prices are high, and the yard operator is willing to pay cash for cars at full market price.
